Dr. Mohamed H. Zidan explains that local anesthetic is injected laparoscopically around the branches of the vagus nerve near the stomach to reduce visceral pain, the deep internal pain that is hard to control with standard painkillers and is linked to nausea and vomiting after waking up. He cites studies showing a marked reduction in pain compared with standard painkillers over the first 8 to 14 hours, the most painful period after surgery.‎

How can we reduce pain after laparoscopic surgery? After sleeve gastrectomy, hiatal hernia repair or gallbladder removal, we use a modern technique to reduce pain: the paragastric block. In this technique, we use the laparoscope to inject a local anesthetic into the vagus nerve to reduce pain after the operation. Visceral pain, the pain inside the abdominal organs, comes from the nerves that supply the internal organs. It is difficult to control with conventional painkillers and is linked to nausea and vomiting after waking up from anesthesia. Studies have shown that the paragastric block reduces post-operative pain three times more than standard painkillers, for a period of 8 to 14 hours, which is the most painful period after surgery. So the paragastric block helps the patient return to normal life as quickly as possible.
