Dr. Mohamed H. Zidan explains that after open surgery the advice used to be about six months before going back to the gym, but laparoscopic repair has changed that: walking and using stairs on the day of surgery, desk work and daily life within three to five days, brisk walking and swimming after two weeks, and sport and the gym after four to six weeks. He cites a study of 198 athletes in which 94% returned to full activity within four weeks, while noting that timing varies between patients.

"When can I go back to the gym and sport after hernia surgery?" It's the question I'm asked most in clinic. After open surgery, the answer used to be months; we always advised patients they could go to the gym after six months. But now the answer has changed completely with laparoscopic repair. On the day of the operation, we advise patients to start moving and to go up and down stairs. Within three to five days they can return to desk work and daily life. After two weeks they can walk briskly and go back to swimming. And after four to six weeks they can return to sport and the gym. By then, the tissues have regained their full strength and function for a return to full activity. In a study of 198 athletes, 94% returned to full sporting activity within four weeks. But of course, the return to normal life and the gym varies from one patient to another.
